EXTRA DUTY EMPLOYMENT
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) manages a program for the employment of certified and sworn deputy sheriffs during their off-duty hours. Extra Duty deputies are generally hired to facilitate traffic control, provide security, or escort heavy equipment or wide load transports. The ECSO Extra Duty Employment Office is responsible for the overall management of extra duty assignments and services.
To hire a deputy for an extra duty detail, you must submit an ECSO Extra-Duty Vendor Request Form (ESO-411) to the Extra Duty Employment Office at least three business days before your event. Requests received less than three (3) business days before the event may not allow sufficient time for the request to be accepted or filled prior to your event.
Extra Duty Employers are defined as private individuals, private businesses, and/or governmental entities other than the ECSO. Compensation and/or benefits of any kind from extra duty employers shall not constitute compensation and/or benefits from the ECSO.
DISCLAIMER
The ability to hire an extra duty deputy is at the sole discretion of the ECSO. The ECSO reserves the right to decline detail requests that may be deemed inappropriate for our deputies.
The extra duty program is completely voluntary. There is no guarantee that your detail request will be filled. It is the responsibility of the extra duty employer to contact the Extra Duty Employment Office during normal business hours prior to the detail’s projected start time to confirm that your detail was filled.
For officer safety, a minimum number of deputies per number of attendees at an event are required. The applicant may request a specific number of deputies; however, the ECSO will make the ultimate decision as to the appropriate number of deputies required to work a specific detail and whether supervisors are required.
Details requiring four (4) or more deputies will be assigned a supervisor with applicable fees. The ECSO further reserves the right to cancel extra duty details without notice and to recall deputies for official duty when necessary at any time. The ECSO shall not have any responsibility nor be subject to any penalty for doing so.

PAYMENT
The current rate of pay for extra duty is $50.00 an hour with a four (4) hour minimum*.
There will be a four (4) hour minimum charge per deputy for all extra duty details regardless of the actual time spent on the detail.
Employers canceling an extra-duty employment request are required to provide a twelve (12) hour notice for routine cancellations, or a three (3) hour notice for weather related cancellations to the Extra-Duty Employment Coordinator’s Office. These guidelines will allow for proper notification of the assigned deputies.
Employers who fail to provide notification within the above time frames will be required to pay the four (4) hour minimum for each deputy scheduled to work.
