Extra Duty Hero Award: Bergen County Detectives Step In During Mid-Flight Disturbance

That commitment was on full display when Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Cesar Fernandez, Jonathan Veloz, and Gianina Ocasio stepped in to help protect passengers and crew during a disturbance aboard a commercial flight.

For their professionalism, quick thinking, and willingness to act while off duty, Detectives Fernandez, Veloz, and Ocasio have been selected as recipients of the Extra Duty Hero Award.

Stepping In at 30,000 Feet

On August 5, 2026, the three detectives were off duty aboard a United Airlines flight traveling from Newark to Fort Lauderdale when a passenger began causing a disturbance.

According to reports, the passenger appeared intoxicated and had been verbally confronting flight attendants for an extended period after being refused additional alcohol. As the situation escalated and became physical, the Bergen County detectives moved from the rear of the aircraft to assist.

Retired Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, who was also traveling on the flight, had stepped in as well. Together, the law enforcement professionals gained control of the passenger and secured him using plastic restraints.

The detectives helped keep the situation under control until the aircraft landed in Fort Lauderdale, where Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies took the passenger into custody.

Calm Under Pressure

The incident placed the detectives in an unpredictable situation far outside their normal working environment, but their training and commitment to public safety remained the same.

Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton praised the detectives for their professionalism, sound judgment, and composure, noting that their quick actions helped prevent the situation from escalating further and reassured the passengers onboard.

They were not on duty. They were not responding to a dispatched call. But when passengers and flight crew needed help, they stepped forward.
